Material specular glossiness having no effect

When I adjust the specular glossiness nothing appears to change for me. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

Ah looks like the colour was set to black by default. Changing it to white makes it work!

But with the glossiness set to 0 it doesn’t look right with the white!

Any ideas?
