Engine v2.22.0

Engine v2.22.0 has been released.

This release is available as an RC build in the Editor, please test your projects and report any issues. We’re planning to promote this version to be the default version in the Editor on or after Thursday 10 September 2026.

The examples browser also gains three new categories - Debug, Demos and Graphics Advanced.

New engine examples:

  • VAT Characters - Ten thousand animated characters in one instanced draw call using a Vertex Animation Texture

  • Frustum Culling - A camera’s view volume drawn with WireRenderer, with bounding boxes colored by containment

  • Wire Shapes - Every shape WireRenderer can draw, animated across the range of values each accepts

  • Catapult - Launch burning boulders at a marching army rendered as one instanced VAT draw call

  • Depth Effects - Volumetric fog and depth of field on a Gaussian Splat scene, with no proxy geometry

  • Volumetric Fog Local Lights - Volumetric fog lit by clustered omni and spot lights over a night-time terrain

  • Volumetric Fog Shafts - Spot and omni lights casting shafts through the holes of a carbon 60 sphere

  • Transform Feedback Separate - A GPU flock using transform feedback in separate-buffer mode, one buffer per captured varying

  • Custom MSAA Resolve - Hardware MSAA resolve compared with a custom resolve that tonemaps each sample before averaging

  • MSAA Depth Fog - Depth fog from a resolved depth compared with per-sample fog from a multisampled buffer

  • Parallax Mapping - Height map parallax in both offset and ray-marched modes, and switched off for comparison

  • Parallax Terrain - Parallax mapping on open ground, seen across a wide range of distances and angles

  • Shader Material Shadows - A custom ShaderMaterial casting shadows, including skinned, morphed and alpha-tested meshes

  • Text Justify - Left, center and right text alignment, plus the new justified layout

Lots of useful additions in this RC, especially the new graphics and debugging examples. I’ll test it with existing projects and report any issues I find.
