Editor Engine v2 Support

We are exciting to announce the release of Engine v2 support in the Editor!

Existing projects will continue to run on Engine v1 in the editor, the launcher and when published/downloaded. To switch your environment to use Engine v2 navigate to Settings → Engine and click the SWITCH TO ENGINE V2 button.

Note: This will prompt you with a dialog box to confirm the switchover.

If you wish to test your project using Engine v1 or v2 in the editor you can use the v1 and v2 query parameters respectively (e.g. https://playcanvas.com/editor/scene/2148249?v1).

For testing your project in the launcher using Engine v1 or v2 hover over the Launch button and toggle Force Engine V2 (or `Force Engine V1 depending on which engine your project is set to use).

Cool! Looking forward to upgrading.

Is the team anticipating potentially removing 1.x support as soon as Aug 2025? It seems the latest authoritative info says 1.x Editor support may end as soon as then. Referring to the 2.0.0 release announcement blog post.

No final call on this has been made, but it’s very unlikely we’d remove it sooner than at the end of 2025, if that. I assume your project requires WebGL1 support, as that’s the only reason to use engine v1?

Thanks for the info. No, the project does not depend on WebGL1 support. I ask for planning purposes.

We understand the v1 Editor can still be accessed using the ?v1 query parameter. Could you clarify how long for? Is it expected to remain available until the official end of life for Engine v1 (…expected for the end of 2025, at least…), or might it be removed earlier? Any details on the timeline would help us plan our transition. Thank you!

The v1 editor is very temporary - only till we confirm the v2 is stable and working well, which could be a week or two perhaps.
