Can we develop our own editor based on open-source PlayCanvas Engine?

Can we develop our own editor based on open source material? He might be almost the same as the official one!

Hi @GeekROS and welcome,

That’s a good question, the quick answer is no, if you are talking about creating your own material channels with your own settings.

But you can use a regular script to code your own material/shader. If you’d like to have it run/preview inside the editor that can be done using the PlayCanvas editor API.

We plan to redevelop an editor for our own commercial projects, so we cannot use the official editor.

Ah got it, you are asking of writing your own editor based on open source libraries (=materials).

You can definitely do so and work with the PlayCanvas engine directly. From what I understand it won’t be an easy task, but still possible.

Ok, thank you very much for your answer, we will solve the technical problem, thank you again.

Maybe you can edit the title to Can we develop our own editor based on open-source PlayCanvas Engine? so others who are interested in this subject find this one easier.
